Fire Ants

What are Fire Ants?

Fire ants are small, reddish-brown to black insects. The adults only grow to be 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch long.

Fire ants have powerful mandibles that they use to grip their victim's skin; they then inject venom using a stinger placed on their rear ends.

Fire ants construct unique nesting mounds. Their enormous, irregularly shaped, 2 to 4 foot wide nests are flat and large.

Fire Ants Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are fire ants dangerous?

Fire ants are quick to anger and will attack any perceived threat to themselves or their colony. Passing by a nest is sufficient to provoke an attack.

The sting of a fire ant is excruciatingly painful and causes a sensation like that of a fire. The venom they inject into their victims is toxic enough to provoke an allergic reaction and, in the case of a collective attack, may cause anaphylactic shock.

In addition to the health dangers they bring, fire ants have the ability to cause damage to agricultural crops, young plants, and indoor plants.

In homes and other structures, fire ants are attracted by electrical equipment and cause damage to air conditioners, circuit breakers, and other appliances.

Fire ants are invasive and difficult to control; they are aggressive and will drive out other kinds of ants from a given area.

Why do I have a fire ant problem?

Fire ants are an issue throughout the year, although they are most active during warm weather. Properties with open, sunny nesting areas attract fire ants. Unfortunately, the majority of residential yards are ideal nesting sites.

Additionally, they install new sod, trees, flowers, and plants acquired from a garden center. Fire ants are omnivores that consume plants, fruits, meat, insects, and earthworms.

Fire ant food sources include gardens, outdoor dining areas, garbage cans, compost bins, and pet food.

Where will I find fire ants?

In thickly forested, shady regions, you won't locate fire ants. To construct their nests, these sun-loving bugs prefer open areas. Fire ant nesting areas include yards, parks, and golf courses.

They nest in the middle of grassy areas, along foundations, and along fence lines. Along rivers, ponds, and streams, you'll also discover them in the soil.

Fire ants prefer to dwell outside, but they will occasionally find their way inside through air conditioning systems or outside wall gaps.
