Every creature has a life cycle, no matter the size or species; even viruses have one! The life cycle of a mosquito is relatively simple: egg, larvae, pupa, adult; in that order.

The average lifespan for a mosquito without being eaten by an animal or dying of natural causes is about 1-2 months.

However, before they die, their young are already developing. This means there will be more females in search of a blood meal soon.

Let's take a deeper look at each step in the mosquito's life cycle:

Egg

Ponds, mud, and puddles can provide the perfect place for Female Mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Should the conditions be good for mosquito egg hatching, it can be in less than 48 hours.

If the conditions aren't favorable, it could take as much as a week for mosquito eggs to hatch. No matter how they lay, the eggs, water are used for mosquitos to grow larvae.

For mosquitoes, laying their eggs in water is a great place to lay their eggs, especially in pools of water. Mosquito's eggs have been laid in pairs or together to form a raft.

Larvae

Mosquito's larvae are a quarter-inch long and resemble hairy worms. They spend most of their time hanging upside over nearby the surface and eating.

They feed on microorganisms such as algae and fungus and need to eat a lot before they can grow four-fold. When their last mass molts, the larvae are called pupae and are about twice as big as their original size.

The larvae stages last around 14 days, and larval stages last around 14 days; they are called pupae, double the size of the pupae.

Pupae

Contrary to larvae parasite molting in mosquitos, pupae neither eat or molt. Instead, this phase will include transformation and metamorphosis into adult mosquitoes.

If this stage is disturbed, then its body will dive and fall to protect itself. Once the mosquito matures, the pupa reaches the surface of the water, splitting in its shell and entering the water surface.

Adults

Mosquitoes reach adulthood after emerging from their pupal casings. Males hatch first and are followed by the females shortly afterward, at which time there is a mating swarm.

Males live for a couple of weeks, but females can live for almost a month. The males feed on nectar; however, as you learned, the females will need a blood meal at some point, which they get through biting humans.

After finding a blood meal, the female mosquito lays her eggs and starts the cycle again.
